چکیده

What is the relevance of Schistosoma for disease? Helminthes of the genus Schistosoma are the cause of schistosomiasis, originally termed bilharzia in honor of Theodor Bilharz, who first described these worm parasites in 1851. Aside from malaria, schistosomiasis is the most prevalent parasitic infection in the world, affecting over 200 million people in 76 countries of the tropics and subtropics. The blood flukes live in the abdominal veins of their vertebrate definitive hosts and produce eggs. About 50% pass through the intestinal wall to enter the gut lumen. Eggs retained in the gut wall induce inflammation, hyperplasia, ulceration, microabscess formation and polyposis. The remaining 50% are mainly deposited in spleen and liver resulting in presinusoidal inflammation and periportal fibrosis.

SCHISTOSOMAHAEMATOBIUM CONTROL IN KHOOZESTAN PROVINCE IN IRAN: PROSPERITIES AND FAILURES

ABSTRACT Background: Schistosoma haematobium is a parasite that is carried by freshwater snails and induces gastrointestinal and urinary disease, depending on its species. In Khoozestan, one of the provinces in Iran, schistosomiasis was endemic. This study reports the results of schistosomiasis control in this region. Methods: From 1981 to 2001 nearly 650 villages and 20 cities were under surv...

Schistosoma Weinland, 1858 from Hippopotamus amphibius Linnaeus, 1758 in the Kruger National Park.

Adults of Schistosoma edwardiense Thurston, 1964, were recovered from Hippopotamus amphibius in the Kruger National Park. Small round to oval Schistosoma margrebowiei-like eggs, presumed to be those of S. edwardiense, were found fairly frequently in the faeces of infected hippopotami together with a few Schistosoma haematobium-like eggs the identity of which remains uncertain. Biomphalaria sp.,...

Testicular schistosomiasis mimicking tumour.

Schistosomiasis or bilharziasis is a disease caused by Schistosoma. When infecting men the most common parasites are Schistosoma mansoni, Schistosoma japonicum and Schistosoma haematobium. The Schistosoma mansoni is the only endemic parasite in Brazil. We present a case of testicular schistosomiasis simulating malignancy. The case was treated successfully by excisional biopsy and praziquantel t...

Evolutionary analysis of the cystatin family in three Schistosoma species

The cystatin family comprises cysteine protease inhibitors distributed in 3 subfamilies (I25A-C). Family members lacking cystatin activity are currently unclassified. Little is known about the evolution of Schistosoma cystatins, their physiological roles, and expression patterns in the parasite life cycle. The present study aimed to identify cystatin homologs in the predicted proteome of three ...
